Hi all,

My family and I are hoping to buy a holiday home in Costa Blanca and currently looking at Oliva and surrounds. We have two girls and a dog and would like somewhere big enough for 3/4 bedrooms as my husband can also work from 'home' which means we can spend long holidays in Spain. We'd like somewhere with easy access to the beach/water sports and also a bit of culture too (we want the girls to learnSpanish and hopefully meet some other kids their age) and we would consider a small village if it has a few basic shops/bars but would prefer a small town. Any advice on areas outside of Oliva (we are looking at Oliva as our first choice) but would consider surrounding villages too if they meet the criteria. We are coming out shortly to have a look around and also hopefully see some houses but any information to narrow down our search would be warmly welcomed!

Thank you in advance,

Sarah

Thank you for your message-we’ll have a look around the area as we don’t know it at all currently, we’re basing our search on what we’ve gleaned from the internet so far as we only really know Andalucia in any detail.

Many thanks, for the advice though!

Kind regards,

Sarah

Hi Sarah

There are lots of lovely villages and towns around Oliva but it is difficult to recommend any particular villages without knowing what your priorities are.  For example if you want to be somewhere there are lots of  other English and expats, villages close to Gandia and Oliva are probably best, such as La Font D'En Carros, or further inland places like Villalonga.  If you want to be close to the beach there are some lovely villages along the coast, although be warned many have a 'village centre' and a beach area that are quite separate and the beach areas can be pretty quiet outside the summer season.

Lots of us choose to live in villages further inland though as this gives a more true authentic Spanish environment where it is easier to make long term friends and become part of the village life. Villages also really come to life during all the many fiestas. As there are so many gorgeous beaches, and most of the roads are pretty good, a 15 - 30 minute drive to the beach is not an issue for us and the cheaper house prices inland more than make up for the drive. Also, village life is more consistent throughout the year, whereas the beach areas can be VERY busy in summer but dead in winter.  Another advantage to be a bit further inland from Oliva/Gandia is that the countryside is gorgeous, green and has lots of mountains and hills to explore both walking and cycling. There are even sports such as rock climbing.

I would suggest a holiday in a rented house or apartment for a week or two in or around Oliva and then going to explore.

All the best

Sounds like Jalon might fit your criteria.

10-15 minutes to the beach at Calpe on the southerly direction, 25 minutes to Denia on the eastern side.

Not a village, a small town really but with a very village feel, a substantial integrated British community but still retains its Spanish identity.

Thank you for your replies.....we plan to look at both houses in Oliva and also some nearby villages.....and then we’ll have a better idea of what suits! But thank you some good advice there-much appreciated!

Laqueria de la comtessa sits between gandia and oliva. I have recently purchased here and find it meets all my needs. It's a lovely welcoming village. If you need more info please feel free to message me as I remember wanting some advice at the time

Hi Sue,

Thank you for your message....and advice, we’ve seen some houses in Miramar and Oliva and also Bellreguard...and it’s a case of weighing up what we want/need and seeing which fits best as I think we could be happy in all three places but sadly can only choose one....Miramar and Bellreguard do seem a bit quiet but very friendly.....Oliva is obviously larger but has more facilities in some ways......it’s a tough decision! What swayed your decision to a village? We have two pre teen but quiet girls who’d be happy as long as they have beach/swimming (municipal) pool access.......I’m torn.....and my husband thinks we are in danger of over thinking it........but we do want to make the right decision as it’s not an opportunity that will come round again soon! Any advice gratefully received! Sarah and family
