Hello Diane and Tom,
We have an apartment in an Alicante city suburb. Like yourselves we felt a fairly instant attraction to Alicante as we travelled the very short distance from the airport on our first visit in 2017.
It provides so much, old town, marina, beach, shopping and excellent public transport. Trains, trams, buses, even boats and planes within a few minutes of where we live.
The beach of San Juan is amazing and I'm sure the area has nice restaurants and shops. Do you need a car to easily access all?
Both areas are predominantly Spanish and yes it's not easy to meet other english speakers.
A facebook search might reveal local groups?
We joined INTERNATIONS.org which is an international forum. Within that you can choose different meet up groups, for example, coffee and dinner groups. We met many people of all ages from US, UK, Scandinavia, at various functions in Alicante.
A few members become facilitators and organise the location and menu, and then invite all the relevant members.
I know there were some lively night-time functions out at some San Juan beach bars... ⛱️ 🍹
Sadly that was pre covid... but meet ups have definitely started again.
We live in Ireland but should return to Alicante next month.
Wishing you every happiness in your new life in Spain
Maria and John
