Hi all, mark and I are hoping to buy a property in Santa Pola and therefore are coming out in November with the intention of opening a bank account and obtaining our NIE's does anyone please have any advice / tips.  We understand we have to obtain the NIE from a police station and believe that would be in Alicante, can anyone confirm this please.

Hi Rolfes, from experience, don’t go down the local police station road, which was Elche when I tried, only to be told to come back with an appointment, which would possibly be a month later.

Online, I found that my local Spanish embassy Edinburgh as it happened, not too far from my home there, could get me one.

I went there, got the info and email address, went home, filled in the online form and Sent it with the payment, can’t remember how much except it was the same as in Spain. About 2 weeks later had an email with appointment at the embassy. Went there and saw an official who checked my ID documents,’told me all OK, got our NIE by email, printed them off and took them to Spain to open a bank account, required by inmobiliaria, and then by the Notary.Budget for about 10% on top of the purchase price for expenses, then there are the annual taxes to the local authority plus national. Also the Spanish bank will want to communicate with your UK bank, that’s obligatory, no hiding place.

Good luck.
