Hello. I am thinking seriously about buying a property in Santa Pola. I have been looking at areas for a while now, and somehow Santa Pola has come to the fore. Location near the airport, a town that seems quite Spanish, my neighbours have been holidaying there for several years, driving distance from France, where I live..the property prices seem to be reasonable. I am looking somewhere towards the end of Gran Playa, a couple of blocks back from the beach. I am worrying that this area is too quiet during the winter months? I am not worried about the distance from town and I believe there is a local bus circling round. It is more about will it be a ghost town at this end of town in the winter. Many of the bars and restaurants seem to be open now, but are they open earlier in the year? Are there many people around? Hoping to get some good advice, so thanks in advance!

Good morning Steve, my wife and i have lived in Santa Pola for five years. We live in Gran Playa area and it does get much quieter in the winter months. Many of the properties are second or holiday homes and are occupied mainly in the warmer months. We find it a wonderful town to live in and it has all the necessary amenities. It takes us 15 minutes to walk to the centre of town and 5 minutes to the beach. Many bars are open all year although some close during the cooler months. The people here are mainly Spanish and are the reason we chose to retire here. Good luck with your plans. Russ

Hello Russ.

Your quick and detailed response is much appreciated. I very much want to be able to use the apartment for the winter time as much as the summer. In the south west of France I enjoy very much the good weather and am busier in the summer here. I envisage being in Spain much more in November, January and February, although of course an apartment would get used at other times too. I realise that the Grand Playa area is more touristic and therefore quieter off season but your reply encourages me. When I look at the commerces in that part of the town they are still open so people must be around. The distances that you describe do not put me off at all. It being very Spanish is for me a good reason to consider the town favourably. Are there clubs and activities going on too out of season? I appreciate the chance to pick someone's brain a little, who is on the ground and with experience there. Thanks.

Steve.

We are not aware of any groups in Santa Pola as the language exchange group finished when the Polamar hotel closed. Although we are in our 60's we are trying to learn Spanish and although far from fluent our efforts have been much appreciated by our friends. Our circle of friends include our neighbours who are Spanish/Ukranian and others who are Spanish and Portuguese. Some speak a little English and with our little Spanish we get along very well. We see each other most days and consider them to be very good friends. If you make an effort you wont go far wrong. Any further questions please just ask. Russ

Hi, we have a house up near gran playa hotel a 5 mins walk to the beach and love it! Although it is a holiday home and we are still governed by school holidays. July and august are so busy you'll appreciate the quieter months ! Ive been out in every month and found jan/feb quite but for a stroll in to the town you'll find it's still very busy. Our neighbours are all spanish and like Russ said, with our little spanish we get on and are now firm family friends! Personally we prefer to be where we are as its just out of the main hub and others would say its too far out and too quite, but each to their own, what i can say is santa pola as a whole is such a lovely town and we've loved having our house there for the past 7 years! All the best with your search, dave

Thanks Dave, what you have said is very helpful, and overall supports my choice of Santa Pola. You are looking at it through a different set of eyes but equally useful. Thank again. Steve.

I live at the other side of town but my mum lives at Gran playa beach roundabout  …she will tell you there’s always people around as she sits on her balcony overlooking the beach, people watching ;)
