Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me with an issue that I have. I am resident in the UK but own property near Torrevieja. I have owned the property for 15 years and have 5 years left on the mortgage which is with La Caixa bank. I am now intending to pay off the mortgage with the bank.

My problem is finding out how the information to pay off the mortgage with La Caixa. There is no information on line from the bank, calling and emailing them from the UK is not proving to be successful (nobody ever answers the phone who can speak English or replies to an email). I know that I will need to visit the branch to close the mortgage but I was hoping to do the preparatory work first (I don’t want to fly to Spain to then be told that I needed to do something before the visit).

My questionsto forum members are:

Has anyone been able to contact la Caixa bank from the UK and speak to them in English?

Has anyone paid off their La Caixa mortgage early? Can they let me know how they did this?

Thanks

Norm, we paid off early a Caixa mortgage in 2010 and it has become a hassle. We just went into the branch (having seen the balance online beforehand) told them we wanted to repay and suddenly there was an extra 900+€,s to pay to close it off.  We did all that and thought that was that and waited for deeds to come in post. What we didnt know then was you have to close it through a notary and our present solicitor said the cost was 600€ to cover Caixa,s fee and notary. It has become a stumbling block because he wants to use his own notary and Caixa wont do it unless they use theirs. Our solicitor has stated he refuses and now says he will contact land registry to get a statement showing there is no debt on property and that will be sufficient for any future buyer hence saving us 600€,s. As in Spain unless we contact solicitor he never gets back to us so we dont know where we stand with this. Unlike Uk when we paid off early 2 differrent house mortgages, the final payment forces bank to inform land registry and after a few weeks you receive a letter confirming such from land registry and deeds or online storage certificate of deeds. Everything in Spain is a money making service. Havent even contacted our solicitor in over a year now, so dont even know if done. However we paid the 600€ over 2 years ago!

Regards

Pauline.
