Hi Philbo,
If you've bought a brand new car from a main dealer, the dealer will have registered the vehicle and there's nothing more for you to do. Your Town Hall will issue the car tax renewal each year which, in Alicante province, is collected by the SUMA agency. You will receive advance notice of when the bill is due for payment each year, which you can either pay at a SUMA office, online at their website, or set up a direct debit with your bank.
If you've bought a vehicle from a second-hand dealer, in theory the process should be the same, but a friend of mine was hounded by Trafico for almost a year because, unbeknown to her, the dealer she bought the car from didn't complete the transfer of ownership (you have to pay transfer tax plus Trafico's fee), so make sure the dealer has done it.
If you've bought the car privately, you need to ensure that, along with the previous owner, you transfer ownership. This can be done at a Trafico office, but is easier if you pay a gestor to do it for you.
Kind regards,
Kim
