I have just bought a new car, its obviously taxed now but in 12 months time how do I pay the "road tax" ? Will I get a reminder ? Do I have to pay it before the cars 1st birthday or is there a payment window ?

Also do I need to to anything with the registration document ? Someone said I need to take it to the trafico office - but why ?

thanks in advance

Hi Philbo,

If you've bought a brand new car from a main dealer, the dealer will have registered the vehicle and there's nothing more for you to do.  Your Town Hall will issue the car tax renewal each year which, in Alicante province, is collected by the SUMA agency.   You will receive advance notice of when the bill is due for payment each year, which you can either pay at a SUMA office, online at their website, or set up a direct debit with your bank.

If you've bought a vehicle from a second-hand dealer, in theory the process should be the same, but a friend of mine was hounded by Trafico for almost a year because, unbeknown to her, the dealer she bought the car from didn't complete the transfer of ownership (you have to pay transfer tax plus Trafico's fee), so make sure the dealer has done it.

If you've bought the car privately, you need to ensure that, along with the previous owner, you transfer ownership.  This can be done at a Trafico office, but is easier if you pay a gestor to do it for you.

Kind regards,

Kim

You will get a reminder when it's due.

You should also get paperwork to say you are responsible for the tax in a few weeks.

When u pay car tax depends on what town you live in as it can be a different month in different towns. The person who owned the car in January of that year pays the tax the following year( I think that's correct)

If you research it on Google it explains it quite well.

You pay it at it local Suma office & u can set up a direct debit for it for the following years.

Hope that helps

Rose ☺️

If you go to your local Suma office you can set up a direct debit so it automatically gets paid next year.  If you give them your E-mail address they will E-mail you when they will take it and how much it will be.
