I am  British passport holder and an Irish passport holder. If you want freedom of movement within the EU,  DO NOT relinquish your EU citizenship.

Some friends have just this week achieved Spanish citizenship after approx 5 years since application. It is a long and involved process, and, yes, they have to relinquish their UK passports as they are now Spanish.

Hi Stephanie,

As you have to be permanently resident in Spain for 10 years before you can apply for citizenship, that's a very long additional time.  Do you know why it took so long?

Kind regards,

Kim

They have been legally resident here for over ten years. From what I understand from them, part of the length of time was simply holdups in the system and the usual kind of delays. Also, apparently, the sheer numbers of people ahead of them in the queue. Apply the system to all of them and watch the outcome! And the process is quite difficult I gathered.

It depends on the country involved. UK citizens can hold another nationality. I think Spain requires you to renounce your other citizenship before taking up Spanish citizenship.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Hello if you applied before Christmas then you could have had dual nationality. After the Brexit deadline it is no longer allowed. It was hard work and lots of paperwork required. If I hadn't passed a school exam in Germany I would not have been able to apply. I now have a British and German passport. Just scraped through on the 16th of December. What a Relief.
