Hi. I've received a text message from the NHS (who don't yet know I'm a Brexpat!), saying I need to make an appointment for a smear. I don't yet have an S1 (sore point!) and have had to take out private health insurance here. Does anyone know if this is automatically covered, or whether I will need to pay for it please? Ditto a mammogram, which is doubtless due soon. TIA.

Hi Juanita,

Can I take this opportunity to remind everyone of the following.

Regardless of which country we live in, everywoman should routinely avail of smear tests from approx age 20 to 65.

Mammograms from at least age 50 up to age 65.

Every man over age 50 should avail of at least annual Prostate checkups.

Both need regular bowel screenings certainly over age 60.

All above of course need urgent attention if a person finds lumps or changes in their bodies.

Some European countries provide regular screenings and send regular annual or biannual appointments for people to attend.

However so far I haven’t seen visible signs of such a policy within Spain.  Perhaps others may know the answer.

Juanita back to your question,  your private health insurance provider will be able to tell you what services they provide within your policy.   Hopefully you are covered under wellwoman checkups.

Please look up the following link as it could be helpful.

As important as they are such checkups are still elective and I'd be surprised if they were covered under a health insurance policy but for these and all insurance doubts or queries only the specific insurer can give you definitive answers.

It's conceivable that policy conditions require you to have tests when recommended or risk having a possible future claim denied.

Hi Ray

Okay, while Spains health service covers mammograms and smear tests,  do women get notified through a nationwide screening programme?

Thanks Ray,

That’s helpful to know that once people are in the system annual notifications are sent out.

Hopefully women and men will ask for these screenings when they visit their médico.

Kind Regards

Hi

I am with salus insurance and had both done free last Feb.

I Had to see the Gp first who did a referral to a clinic about 10 or 15 minutes from Cabo roig surgery (Sorry can't remember the name of where it was) for the mammogram and had the smear done in the surgery by another GP when I made an appointment.

Think you are able to get this done with salus regardless of the type of cover you have but not sure
