Hip Replacement

My stepfather had both replaced in quick succession some years ago,. No problems.

My mother suffered a fracture last October, rushed into Denia. Excellent treatment, but she was kept in for two weeks instead of the usual 3 days or so because she had an extremely severe UTI also and was very unwell. I stayed in the room with her, Ive stayed in worse  Travelodges! This was not hospitals’ fault but mainly as she is 93 and frail.

She has recovered completely, the Spanish healthcare procedures are excellent.

My wife had a hip replacement at Xmas at the Vinalopo hospital, one of the best in the Costa Blanca.  Within 2 hours of arriving was prepped for surgery at 8 the next morning: 2 days later out with stretcher and ambulance to our door and full assistance.  How can you fault it?

Just one point. If the health authority say you can reduce the delay by having the op done at their cost at a private hospital, think twice before accepting.

This has happened to friends on three occasions. No problem with the ops, but they were send home when they could be and that was it - finish.

I had a knee replaced at Vega Baja hospital. Sent home with 20 anti-DVT injections, one month (later extended to two) course of physiotherapy, and three post-op consultations with the surgeon.

Don’t for one minute think that Denia were happy to keep my mother there occupying a private room bathroom etc for two weeks!! They weren’t and were desperate to get rid of her but couldn’t because she was delirious and in and out of consciousness. The minute they deemed her well enough to leave the medics said, effectively, she’s going in two days, she cant go home, where is she going, your problem. Try finding a space in a Residencia when all offices closed for weekend and my house absolutely unsuitable for wheelchair bound frail old lady. Nightmare. As far as hospital concerned, they have done their job, quite true, and the next stage absolutely nothing to do with them!

Spanish custom is you look after the patient in hospital   and r at home.  It's the families responsibility

Yes, Karen, I am fully aware of this;  however was merely highlighting the practical difficulty. If you read my earlier post you will see that I was v impressed with the system and her care. For someone with no other family to help, it’s a difficult and stressful situation; had it not been for the help of a Spanish friend with ‘contacts’, I have no idea what we would have done.

I fell and broke my hip as well as fracturing my thigh bone one day at about 6pm. Ambulance called and I was taken to Torrevieja hospital. By 8.30pm I was in operating theatre. Absolutely brilliant care. My hip replacement was not done with cement so I had to keep full weight off that leg for 12 weeks - I became a whiz with a Zimmer!! I also have a metal pin in my left thigh. Care in hospital was fantastic, follow-ups and physio also excellent. My husband has had two very serious emergencies and the medics have been fantastic. Hubby wouldn't be here if they hadn't acted so quickly and professionally. Cannot fault the health service here in Spain. It is wonderful. Wishing you all the best.

I had my hip replacement in Febuary,(just in time).The health service in Spain is one of the best in the world.My doctor surgested Segura near Murcia ,but unlike Jims friends experience in private hospitals mine was brilliant.The surgeon / nurses spoke a little English which did help.They did not offer me the alternative of being awake during the operation as some hospitals do,which I would of refused.

I had a private room which my partner slept on for the 6 days I was in.

Aftercare was in my local town,but covid struck so I only had three sessions of physio.This week they telephoned and I am back to start treatment again.

Most important ,you must attended physio,my thigh muscle always aches when I

awake in the morning .

How long did she have to wait before she went ,also if it was privatewhat was the cost regards Andy     thanks
