Hi everyone,

A few days ago I posted that an Irish friend of mine would like to apply for his residency in Spain. He is still in need of support in choosing the correct health insurance in order to proceed.

So far, all the companies that he has been in contact with stated that he needs to pay the full year upfront. To him, that is rather expensive, as he is not earning an income at the present moment.

Does anyone know of a company that would allow him to pay monthly and provide the certificate so that he could proceed?

Your feedback would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I am on the understanding that when applying for residency you need to have PHI paid in full for the first year, at the appointment you will be required to show the certificate of insurance, full payment receipt and insurance policy, co-payments will not be accepted, that’s the procedure I went through last year.

Hi Scassim,

Peter is correct, it's a condition of the application for residency to prove you have paid for the first year's health cover in full.  The Spanish authorities want to be sure that applicants will not be a burden on the State.  Peter mentioned that policies which allow co-payments are not acceptable for residency - neither is Basic cover.

If your friend can't afford to pay for the health cover in full, is he able to meet the other financial requirements of residency?  As an Irish citizen, and so still an EU citizen, this is a lump sum of €6,000 in a Spanish bank account for a minimum of 3 months.

Kind regards,

Kim
