I am so sorry to hear that your beloved husband has died. This must has been the most dreadful blow to you and the children. I think you are extremely brave and positive to be even considering buying a property abroad but you are thinking so the least we can all do is offer some sensible advice

Ok.

You must buy somewhere that you can access easily.

Public transport or walking has to be on the cards.

Close to the sea is always a dream.

All year round life…. vital.

Somewhere your teenage children will enjoy.

Alicante is lovely but I don’t know very much to offer by way of advice other than I think property may be more pricey.

Torrevieja   It’s a working town with year round attractions. Very Spanish but becoming more and more upmarket all the time. The marina is beautiful. There are many apartments close to the sea. Bus service is very good and cheap.

La Mata.   Probably one of my favourite places. Stunning long, Sandy beach. Some stunning new build apartments overlooking the sea. Lots of lovely properties all within walking distance of the sea. Numerous restaurants. Very safe and friendly.

Guardamar.  Another beautiful coastal resort. Well worth a visit.

Santa Pola. Class. I love it too. I’ve  always  thought I’d have considered it if I’d seen it first. Possibly a little more expensive but that’s my thinking   Check it out.  Not far from the airport

Punta Prima Lovely. Coastal

La Zenia. Lovely coastal

All the other areas on the far side of Torrevieja are vast. Built in the last 20 years for tourists. Terrible traffic jams if travelling in or out if Torrevieja . No need to go into Torrevieja as numerous restaurants and shops serving te area.  English. You wouldn’t be lonely as you’ll have lots of English speaking neighbours. Great shopping centre called Zenia Boulevard.

Further along the coast there are several resort areas and all lovely but you’ll benefit from having a car.

Buying over in Spain is easy but sometimes not as easy to sell. You’ll need to be sure where and what you are buying.

Most people will strongly advise rental before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping a property here costs money. Think hard and fast before investing. You’d need to be absolutely certain that you know what you are doing. Discuss the idea with your children. Listen to what they are saying.

We bought our house over 20 years ago  near La  Mata. We have never regretted it. Our children are all grown up with families of their own and try to visit when they can but it’s the two of us that spend the greatest time here.  Every time we come out, we spend money on the house! Yes. It’s by choice but a house has to be cared for and that takes money.  Please think long and hard before you jump into a purchase. Be certain you are doing the right thing for yourself and fir your children.
Good luck.

La Mata springs to mind I'm sure I've seen it on APITS and it has good transport, bars  restaurants and beach and is like a suburb of Torrevieja where it is more towny with commercial centre (habaneras), massive supermarket (carrefour), hospitals, beaches, marinas and most anything large spanish town can offer.

I am in central Torrevieja and I chose to be amongst the Spanish and near the beach.

Torrevieja is a working town so there's always people about. Shops and restaurants open all the year round normally.

Wherever you choose, check it out in the 'off season' months as some places can be quite dead when the holidaymakers go home

Hi so sad to hear about your husband! Where I live in a small town called San isidro. It isn't near the beach, but it is very Spanish and quiet there doesn't appear to be any crime here! There is a English bar come restaurant and butchers called the Bell house.... When I want more entertainment I go into Alicante, or Benidorm sometimes..... It might be worth a look, Guadamar is the nearest beach but half an hour away. We are near the mountains and a village called Hondon de las Frailes. Lots of expats there. It is better to have a car as there is no bus service, but there is a train station that takes you to Alicante and from there you can get to all parts of Spain. The locals here are very friendly..... Benidorm is a good place to look at,close to everything, has a very good bus service around the town and certainly the airport and all other major cities, plus a tram service along the coast,NHS ( Spanish)health centres, schools, many British families living permanently, frequent influx of British  visitors, plenty of jobs for youngsters in the hospitality trade,English spoken almost everywhere .Services of all necessary kinds,Amazon,UK TV,plenty of Police in evidence,it's what you want it to be,worth a consideration.

We bought a small place in Lago Jardin 1. I bought it via remote viewing and we haven't regretted it for a day and we fly out once a month to stay there. Here is one website to look at, but there are more estate agents. https://lagojardin.com/.

It's quiet, the gardens are well managed. The community is a mixture of nationalities, mainly English, Scandinavians and Spanish, some are permanent residents  and some are like us who just use it as a second home. Most of the permanent residents have been there over 20 years. Everyone is friendly, mostly over 50's. There is a huge pool with a pool bar that serves wonderful food and drinks. There is a really good supermarket (https://info.mercadona.es/en/supermarkets), the best brand in Spain, 10 minutes walk away. There are regular buses into Torrevieja (never used them because I drive, but people tell me it's easy).

I always feel like I'm home when I arrive.

Robin
