Hi Ray, I have just received a quote for cost of changing Uk Skoda Octavia(2011) to spanish plates with Spanish-number -plates Company and in their breakdown was :- 1 yr annual car tax 100€. I was stunned as it does have low emissions, exempt from import tax, so as its £30 in Uk, was stunned. I have asked for a quote from other Company so interrested what they tell me car tax would be.

You'd have to ask your town hall to find out how much road tax would be, as it's a local tax and not national. We've got a Fiesta and an EcoSport, and they're €50 each (Orihuela).

Hi Eileen

All things are possible.  It depends what kind of property you'd like to live in as to how much you need to spend.

My observation is that property in Vilamartin and Orihuela Costa is more expensive than in Torrevieja itself, and that inland properties are cheaper again, but then you'd need to run a car.

I think €600 monthly is not enough for two people to live frugally, let alone with a social life, and how would you fund trips back to Blighty?

You should be able to get a studio or one bed apartment, or even an English style bungalow in Torettas 3 for half your lump sum, or thereabouts.  That would give you sufficient to augment your €600 for up to about ten years.

Renting would allow you to have a better, larger property, with nothing to show after ten years, but, if you decided you didn't like that area, you could move on more easily.

If you choose Torrevieja itself, then everything you need is within walking distance so you won't need a car.

You might find torreviejau3a.org helpful when it comes to starting that social life.  We haven't contacted them yet, but according to the website they appear to appeal to most interests.  They meet by the Habaneras shopping centre, not far from the  Torettas developments.

Healthcare may turn out to be an expense after Brexit, the state system may cost £157 each per month, plus prescription costs, if the two countries fail to agree on reciprocal health care.

Everything is relative , you won't know definitively until you bite the bullet.

Good luck, Elizabeth

Hi Eileen,

Buying from a distance is difficult especially since the estate agents never actually show you where the property is located. When we bought I used an estate agents called http://www.solmarestates.com/

They were great and their website actually shows where the property is. The owner is English (nobody is perfect!) and a straight talker - his advice was spot on and found us what we wanted after offering lots of alternatives.

Regards

David
