Morning

We have just bought our property in spain and someone attended yesterday to inspect gas. He charged us €85 for a job that could have costed us below €10. We didn't know anything about the gas safety check and he basically conned us.

Where can we report scams in Torrevieja?

Not a pleasant first experience in Spain!

This usually costs around 60 Euros.

You should have been issued with a numbered certificate from a licensed inspector. The certificate should have a line diagram of your installation on it.

Usually the rubber tube(s) are replaced at extra cost. The tubes only have a 5 year life and they are date-stamped.

A new certificate is needed every 5 years - a legal requirement.

Sorry Anita, not knowing about it doesn’t mean it’s not so. When our first 5 year inspection was done, the previous owners had neglected to inform CEPSA that they had recently had a central heating boiler installed; certificate denied. We then had to get a company to check the boiler (now that was a con as he just looked at it, said ok and went). CEPSA then returned and issued the required certificate. We had the pleasure of paying both companies, about €160 altogether if I remember rightly 🤪🥂

Oh Anila,

This happened to us many years ago when we too knew no better.  Reporting them will be of no use to you as they explained to you in Spanish that they were checking your gas connections and replaced them when there was no need to replace them in the first stage. They charged you fir this service and you paid them. Nothing you can do,I am afraid. They have been at this lark fir years and will continue to do it. They take advantage of the fact that you do not speak or understand their language. They provide paperwork and almost force you to pay. All you can do is to spread the word in the hope that others won’t fall foul if their game. Keep your gate locked and never Allie anyone onto your property regardless of how much they demand. Chase them. They won’t come back with the police even though they lead you to believe they will.

Put it behind you. It has happened to many of us. Bad luck. One less dinner out for you!

Cheer up. I hate them too!

For the avoidance of doubt .... it s a legal requirement to have your gas installation tested and certificated every 5 years.

If your installation explodes, you might not survive to regret anything; but your neighbours may only be maimed.

That is probably correct but these guys were not the proper, authorised people. I posted my experience years ago on another forum and the same thing had happened to lots of others.

These guys come on heavy, in spanish, hammered the table and frightened the living day lights out of two gullible people.  Had they been legal, the paperwork would have shown the name of the authorised gas regulators/ service engineers....not so, a scam I’m  afraid But done in such a way that they gave a service so no comeback. Surprised you haven’t come across this before.

They seem to know that you are newbies ...I wonder how!

With the greatest respect Grannyrose, I’m not sure that the OP stated they were not proper, authorised people. That may well have been your experience. What she did state was the cost, with the assertion that is should, in her opinion, have only cost €10.

She did not state that they were unexpected, only that they had attended.

That it’s not what you might have expected is neither here nor there. As Kevin1960 states, it’s a legal requirement

Of course, if they did not supply the necessary certificate and receipt for monies paid, that is a different matter, and she should, in my opinion contact both the supplier  and the police 🤪🥂

Whilst the five yearly inspection is a legal obligation, you are not obliged to allow entry to a cold-caller. They've tried it on me three times in fifteen years, and each time I've refused them entry. When they started arguing, I told them to go on their way rejoicing.

If you do need an inspection, find out from Repsol or Cepsa who they recognise as an authorised technician.

Thank you for your sweet reply. I felt bad that we had fallen for the trap. But of course never again and you're right its no point reporting them because he had mentioned on the receipt what service he had provided. Its our fault that we did not read the cost of parts (€10) and service charge €75.

Thank you for your reply and wish you all the best
