Nothing will stop anyone determined enough to break in and of course empty dwellings are a prime target.

Over the last couple of days I have received 6 unsolicited calls the last was followed 5 mins later by 2 sales people from a very well known home security company. I got rid of them rather smartly. A couple of hours later I was visited by another saleman from the same company. This guy wouldn't take no for an answer. I complained that he was the 2nd in a couple of hours, he said another one would come tomorrow. I told him that was persecution and that I would complain to the police. He said do it by all means we are allowed to do it. At that point He was told To F$%^  )*(. And as a parting gesture I gave him a selection of finger combinations from various EU countries. I have an internal switch to disable the door bell so I guess i will leave it off for the next couple of days.

We have nothing arriving and friends usually call first and also know we disable the bell.

We already have an alarm system with MW outdoor protection, plus the normal pyro and magnetic detectors.

Hi

Probably the first thing to do is simply change the lock(s).

If it's a holiday home you could also employ a "keyholder" who will regularly check your property for you.

Hopefully you will also get to know your neighbours who could let you know if it happens.

Cheers

Steve

Is this a house or an apartment you intend to buy?  An apartment will come with shutters on the windows and only one door to access it.  Yes, change the lock immediately.

House.  We have accordion gates and shutter doors on our lounge front. The rear window is on a different level ( second floor) and only has shutter doors as the back of the house is accessible only from the gated urbanisation.  The previous only had a heavy steel bar ( removable) which is removed when we are in residence and replaced when leaving. It rest on a support either side of the window.  Our windows open inwards and therefore won’t move with this bar in place.  We have accordion gates across the Front door and front bedroom . Our house is street side so we padlock our gate ALWAYS. Make it difficult for squatters to get onto your property. We have good next door neighbours thankfully who would keep an eye or ear on anything that would be alarming.
Make certain you maintain your place. If there’s a garden, arrange to have it tended as that will send the message that the owners are alive and often about.

I agree that squatters possibly look for a property that looks like it hasn’t been used in a long time.

We never worry about squatters. Our area is well maintained and I’ve never heard of squatters taking possession of a place anywhere near us.

Use your common sense and look around you. You’ll know in your heart if the area isn’t well maintained and loved. Try to buy where some properties are occupied permanently. Some areas are completely empty, all holiday homes. An invitation to thieves and squatters….  Nobody to challenge them.

Good luck.
