Hello' to everyone. I'm going to ask the residential status in Spain, in Torrevieja and I'd like to know if a resident has to fill the tax declaration every year also if retired or unemployed. Because I'm italian and I have lived in Belgium for some years. While In Italy was not necessary in these circumstancies in Belgium it was needed. Thank you for your advice.

For your first year of fiscal residence in Spain - the first year in which you are here for 183 days or more - you have to submit a tax return, even if no tax is due.

For future years, if no tax is due, then you don't need to submit returns.

And good morning to you, Kim.

You're correct in assuming you won't need to do a return for 2018 if the sterling income figures haven't changed. The euro figures to declare would actually be lower than in 2017, as the exchange rate dropped from 1.1407 to 1.1303.

There are actually three ways to work out any tax liability.

I do manual calculations, but you need to be familiar with the system in order to do that.

You can log into the tax return system and enter details into the simulator.

You can prepare an actual tax return. If the bottom line is that no tax is due, then you can just ignore actually submitting it. However, if you've already taken it that far, then you might as well submit the return.

For a couple, the system, if tax is due, will tell you if it's better to submit individual returns or a joint one.

And as it's you, a fourth method is to ask a friend - send me a PM if you want to, and I'll tell you what I'd need. Or come over to me and I'll talk you through doing it yourself for both of you.

thank you Jim for your expert advices. So, if I for exemple go now to ask for a residential status, when I have to submit my first tax return ? At the end of this year or directly the next one ? If I have understood right there is also a way to submit a tax return by internet, is that complicated for someone not expert in financial matters ?

If you become resident here during the second half of 2019 then, irrespective of when you get a residency certificate, you will only be a fiscal resident for 2020, and be due to submit a resident's tax return for 2020 in 2021. If you have a property here then, for the part of 2019 in which you own that property, you will have a do a non-resident tax return, and that can be done at any time in 2020.

If you move here before July this year, then you will be a fiscal resident for 2019, and a resident's tax return will be due for your income in all of 2019, and that return will have to be done between April and June 2020.

so if I understand right, in every case my first tax return should be done in 2020 between april and june for what concerns 2019.  Thank you very much for your explanations.

Provided you only start to live here on or after July 1st 2019, then you're correct.
