Is the Mercadona on Antonia Machado open and is it a good place to shop for weekly shopping value wise?

They all have their own merits.

Carrefour has fabulous deals on Vino, but it is usually very busy, and not a pleasant place to shop.

Mercadona is clean, never full, and good value for money.

For the odd bits of English products, you have Overseas Supermarkets (Iceland) or The Food Company (Tesco)

We have heard Aldi and Lidl are competitive, but we don't go to either of these.

Happy shopping.

Most Spanish supermarkets are comparable in pricing and quality, they are not so easily differentiated as UK chains. Consum is a cooperative and their own brand is always very good quality, Masymas is another good chain. There are a couple of very upmarket names, one is Supercor which belongs to the department store El Corte Inglés and there is Pepe La Sal.

We shop at Mercadona & have done for over half a decade, in that time they have succumbed to the inevitable you get less but it costs more!

You wont find many well known brands, mostly their own, some are ok, others Less good, just trial and error and your own taste. Another poster recently commented on how the quality has gone down at Mercadona and I have to agree. I think I will have to look for another place to shop, it's a case of abc I cant stand the place.

Hello

I disagree with the above post .... I love Mercadona! I have bought in many other supermarkets occasionally during my 18years here but always  do my main shop at Mercadona.

I think the quality is excellent &  price increases are in line with other stores  & since my local store reopened  after a total refurbishment in spring, the choices are much wider  & very varied. They have a good range of products for people who are gluten/lactose free ( just ask if you cant find the products), pet food , fruit & veg, and a new range of prepared , hot foods etc. It's a Spanish store so I dont look for UK products.

The other poster mentioned the quality of some seafood which I don't buy,  but no complaints from me or my friends who find everything we want in there.

Cheers

It’s the one Spanish store I will do anything to avoid having to go into! I don’t like it at all, although I do admit that they have a wide range and have occasionally sourced items there which I couldn’t find elsewhere.

While I’m not a Spanish resident but do spend about half the year there I’ve also found the experience of seafood quality from Mercadona abysmal.

It has tainted our shopping experience and we avoid the chain where possible.

But it’s swings and roundabouts, what suits many won’t suit all, and rightly so.
