Do we need to get a booster injection and passport stamped to return to Spain is it necessary.

Thank you.

You have to get it done in the UK and it's £170 and can be problematic if the French and Spanish don't agree to it. I was informed of this in February as my dogs booster was due so with only two days to expiry I got her to France and then it was no longer a problem ! It's a money making scheme for Vets in UK it cost €35 when I got to Spain and was informed it didn't matter if the booster had expired once the dog was in the EU.

As your rabies vaccination booster date has passed you will need to get an Animal Health Certificate to return to the EU.   Cost of that can vary greatly (ours was £160)and it’s only valid for one return trip within a ??4 month period). That’ll involve a rabies vaccination as yours has expired.  Check with your vet re timings as you certainly need to get a first vaccination some weeks before being allowed to travel - I’m not sure of the requirement if your current vaccination booster date has passed but suspect it’ll be treated as a first vaccination.
If you regularly travel between the EU and UK you should consider getting another Spanish pet passport.   The cost of ours was around €70 including the rabies vaccination.

This might vary from region to region or vet to vet but our Spanish pet passport lasted for an initial 12 months.  After the first booster it will be either 2 years or 3 years before you require another depending on what vet you use

Please be aware that you MUST have boosters done in the EU.  If you let your UK vet mark up your Spanish passport it will be void.  (That’s the guidance.  I’m not sure how strictly it’s enforced - but I wouldn’t risk it!).

The whole thing is so stupid.  In our case our vet in Edinburgh is actually Spanish yet can’t touch our pet passport without invalidating it!
