Hello Declan

As you will have a euro account in Ireland would it not be cheaper if you transferred 700€ on set day of month by a standing order by your irish bank or Sabadell will do this with no fee and no transfer exchange rate by direct debit. Then next day transfer back by a standing order with Sabadell and you would have a fee free account. You would have to do it in person in Spain but its done by many to overcome fees. I too had same problem with BBVA, told go into bank by helpline but branch said couldnt set up account with a NIE. Bankia too, but could have opened in branch with smaller fee than Sabadell but wasnt happy with it.

Regards

Pauline

Yeah Pauline,

thanks, I probably can do this. I might look into it. As it happens, I want to get a back up credit card, so I might kill two birds with one stone.  I know there's a lot of slagging off of the Euro, but I have to say I love the certainty and ease it brings. I really don't mind who I bank with, but until I can manage Spanish, I need one that I can navigate easily in English!

Hi Venessa, don't even go there with Santander, I have 5 accounts with them in the UK and filled in forms to "merge" the accounts and 3 months later told they are totally separate and I can't even get my UK cheques in to the accounts here in Spain. I will look at closing them and sticking with my Spanish accounts
