.. unless you use a VPN (virtual private network) service.
Can still be a bit variable, actually eg. try to place a bet on Lotto and it detects you are using a UK VPN address somehow (so, rumbled!) but I can usually use BBC iplayer by engaging a UK IP address via a VPN subscription. It does often take a few attempts by hitting the 'try again' button.
It's a detail but Netflix told me a couple of years back that its service should, in theory at least, be able to be accessed by subscribers globally without having to use a VPN. It's certainly true here in Spain if you are a UK subscriber. On occasion, though, you may get Spanish-biased offers of what to watch and what is trending most popularly in Spain; yawn, just disregard. Your 'favourites' and 'continue playing' are as in the UK
Failing all that, Avatel - can't remember their latest name change and who cares anyway: still liveried as such at their office opposite Alcampo at La Zenia boulevard - has a 'Switch on/off' contract. Check their terms as may only be available for existing clients. Whilst in UK I instruct them to suspend and my TV and Internet service reverts from €30 per month to a fiver from the next monthly payment. This certainly suits me, especially after over 6 years of having been screwed €360 per year (€30 pr month) regardless of use.
It's not all good with them, though. You will get stuck with BBC 1 Northern Ireland. Great if you're Irish (and want the NI channel.) Dull, regional piffle from presenters you have never seen before, if you're not. And just to further attempt to hoodwink the English (and Welsh and Scots) as you change to the channel, a red square BBC type icon briefly appears bottom right stating 'BBC London.' Only, it isn't. I said that already, didn't I. Nope, I can't work that out either but it is clearly not a Beeb generated icon. It's been 'assumed' by Avatel and overlaid. Nothing is simple here in Spain, is it?
And, no, of course they won't warn you in advance, as you sign up. Not sure why but this 'no channel for the English' saga is a recurring issue and just now Avatel's tech dept says I'm stuck with it.
Reading between the lines, I would say they continue to have a hapless contract negotiater. And/or someone who thinks BBC is just one-size-fits-all channel.
Still, could have been worse. Could have been BBC Wales with their various programmes in Welsh. Now that would have been depressing.
Fingers bleeding now.
Hope helps.
