We were over looking at properties in villa Martin area last week. We booked a hire car from gold car, collected Alicante airport.

It cost £600 for the week all in with insurance. It was a golf, with no power stearing & manual. Quite basic plus the right hand side was all bashed in…never again!

Any recommendations please for next time?

For the record there is no model of Golf which does not have power steering, in fact I dont think there will be a mainstream car made in the last 30-40 years which hasn't had it as standard.

It may have been faulty on that particular car and not working effectively but believe me without any assistance at all you wouldn't have driven it off the airport complex!

To demonstrate that simply try to turn the wheel without the engine running!

Autos are rare and would need to be specificaliy requested well in advance. Having so few available could be the reason you got a ratty car, e.g. less willing to take them out of service for repairs.

We used edi. Very good although car was basic it was fairly new. Returns are in the car park top floor not with all the main car rental companies so read the leaflet provided - which we didnt!

I would have thought that it WAS helpful, at least to help your understanding of the vehicle you were supplied with.

Hi, we just got back from Villmartin and hired a car with Europcar at Alicante Airport for 1 week for 187 Euro. We had booked a VW Polo automatic but were given a free upgrade to a brand new Captur. A couple of tips. We always price check and compare deals, this time it was with booking.com and that was cheaper than booking direct with the company (25% discount). I would never get the excess insurance with the car supplier as the inflate the price. We got that with Leisure Guard for about £2.40 a day.

We paid a premium to pickup and drop-off at the airport as we had an early return flight and I didn’t want the extra bother of an off-site company.
