Hi Kim,

No problem for your husband to hire a car in Spain, but as he only has the old-style paper licence, he will also need to apply for an IDP (International Driving Permit), which he can get from a Post Office branch for the cost of £5.50:

Kind regards,

Kim

For anything to do with driving in Spain it may help if you have a look at the N332 website which is for English speaking people.   It is run in conjunction with officers of the Guardia Civil and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code on it.
