Hi Everyone,

is it worth buying somewhere in Spain now being a Brit? I would like to live full time or most of the time but not sure how easy that would be now? My parents are Irish so I could get an Irish passport woukd that make a difference?

Thanks everyone 😊

Having an Irish passport would make it easier to apply for residency (register) in Spain.

You can apply (register) while you're in Spain as opposed to having to apply from the UK.

The financial requirements are a lot lower. (1 X PREM instead of 4X PREM).

You will be able to work as an EU citizen.

You will still need to prove that you have healthcare. This could be via your S1 (if you qualify for state pension) or through contracted employment in Spain. If you have neither then you'll need private healthcare.

Good luck

This topic has really been done to death. Must be hundreds of threads on the same subject.

However, depends on what you are looking for. Not so cheap to live in Spain now but most of your outgoings will be cheaper than UK.

As regards to moving over and retiring, it is still easy with an Irish passport. You just need to show an income equal to the IPREM (the figure they use for calculating benefits etc) which is currently 600 euro a month per person but they aren't really that hot on proving it for a EU citizen and will take into account things like rent if you don't own your own property.

Also need medical insurance which must meet the minimum standards of the Spanish system. This can either be a private policy or home country provided if you are over pensionable age in your own country and drawing the state pension.

You must sign on the register of EU foreign nationals resident in Spain in the first 3 months of arrival.

If buying a property, remember to add about 14% on top of the cost for taxes and legal fees etc.

Food prices can be more expensive than UK depending on what you are buying. Council tax is extremely cheap and I pay per year what my council tax in UK is now per month.

I'm sure if you search the site you will see many, many threads on exactly the same thing with lots of links to official sites to point you in the right direction.

Absolutely get an Irsh passport as you would not be restricted to the 90/180 day rule. This link will explain:

https://www.iexpats.com/europes-90-180-day-visa-rule-explained/

If you intend to stay longer than 90 days you need to apply for a Certificate of Registration in the Oficina de Extranjeros (Foreigners Office). These links will explain what you need to do as an Irish (EU) citizen.

Get  your  Irish  passport  first  fence to jump. Then  come to  Spain 🇪🇸  for a few  weeks  on a few occasions. Rent  Property  in different  areas. Get  to know permanent Residents.  Take note of  your  out  going  compare them with your  outgoing  in UK    Allow  for  Car as public  transport  not great. As  shopping  in very hot  weather  and using  Public transport  not ideally. Plus  if  you to get  away for a day or 2 sightseeing. Only you can decide  if living in Spain 🇪🇸  suits you. Do  not  take all of TV programs  about buying  in Spain as a wonderful  life in the Sun as it is  somewhat  different  and difficult  for some. If  you can keep a bolthole  in UK to escape  horrendous  heat in July  and August.

Public transport here in Benidorm is absolutely wonderful, more buses come along than you'd expect, early morning until late night. At a €1.60 price tag to all the town and local areas, perfect. Parking here in summer is horrendous so public transport is a must.
