Hi Mick

I am afraid you would need private health insurance and this would be about 71€ per month for your wife and 87.50€ for yourself.

I will send you private message too.

DWP might give you cover for up to two years, depending on your contributions. Or you could pay into the Valencian health system - search this forum for details.

You would have emergency cover only with EHIC card up to 2 years and to pay into the Spanish system, you have to have Residencia, but you cannot get Residencia unless you have a certificate to say that you have private health insurance.

HI Mick. I am no expert on this subject but this is what I have learnt so far, being in a similar situation myself.

As you are not a state pensioner you will not get access to Spain's medical system.

There is a system called "convenio especial" which is a contributory scheme which gives the same benefits as the non-contributory scheme BUT you can only go onto this when you have been resident for 12 months. the contribution is e65 per month if you are under 65. There's lots of info about this on the internet.

If you are still resident in the UK (ie you spend more that 183 consecutive days in the UK)  you can continue to use your EHIC card but this is only for emergencies.

Otherwise it is private medical insurance (Adeslas, BUPA etc) or fingers crossed.

Hope this helps,
