Second Car prices  are expensive.  Car  insurance  is  Cheap  as  Car is insured  not the Person.  Car tax  is cheaper  depending  on area  you live  in.

Property  tax is chap compared to UK. Water and Electricity  similar  to UK

I  find   some groceries  prices more Expensive  than UK.  Salmon  and Steak very  expensive.   Dining  out is  very  reasonable.

Bank  account  fees  very  expensive

Well  that is my  experience  of cost of living in  Spain 🇪🇸

This is very helpful,  thank you.

Are you happy you moved though?

How long you lived in spain? Are you from the UK?

Think we will only want 1 car.

Thanks

Hi Anita,

Given that you're only in your 30s, have you looked at how you will fund your healthcare?  If you are able to secure work contracts - and that's a big IF - your employer will pay your social security contributions, which will enable you to use the Spanish State healthcare.  Alternatively, you could register as "autonomo" (self-employed) and make the (expensive) contributions direct, but until you secure either of these routes, you will need to pay for Private Health Insurance, which does not cover the cost of prescriptions.  These costs will be a significant chunk of your required budget.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi.

I  am  from Republic of Ireland. I  have  not moved   permanently  just  yet as  have  a House  in  Rural  Ireland   beside  the  coast  that has a large   Lawn that takes  a lot  of  work. It  1  reason I   have  not  moved  to Torrevieja  permanently   but it  getting  serious   consideration.

On  another  note  to let  you  know  Joiner  work  is  completely   different  than UK and Ireland.  No  Timber in Roof construction   no  Timber/Studs  walls. Very  little  second fix  Joiner  work.  The  heat  would  destroy  Timber   twisting.

Hi Kim,

Thank you for your reply.

I will look into private health care aswell.

As I have take some medication each day for a medical issue I have (not life threatning).

When applying for jobs in spain is it through the employers, or through the agency? Then work a probation period before taken on permanent like the UK?

I'm 36 and hoping to move next year or latest 2026, with my daughter will finish her college by then.

We are coming over next year for a holiday near torrevieja or near areas just to have a look at areas etc, so haven't got a set place in mind yet.

Thanks

Anita

Be aware private medical insurance will not cover existing conditions and all prescriptions will need to be paid for unless you are a pensioner and receiving below a certain amount.

I  am  on  prescription  medication  in  Ireland.  If  and  has  happened  on a few  occasions  I  run  short. The  price  of my  medication  in Spain  is almost  double.  I  pay  a maximum  of 80 euros  a month  in  Ireland.  So  just price  medication  when in Spain 🇪🇸

I  would  also  advise  you  to check   the  strength  of   medication  you  may  be  on in UK.

As  I  have been prescribed  a  medication  💊   in Ireland  strength  is 25mg  and the  best I  could  obtain  in Punta Prima  was  20 my  and unfortunately  it was not adequate  for my condition  and  another  reason  a permanent  move to Torrevieja  is  proving  to  be a Stumbling  block

Hi Anita,

The job market in Spain is probably best summarised as "volatile".  We have the highest rate of unemployment in the EU, running at 13% in January this year, with youngsters and the over 50s worst affected.  Work contracts, if you're lucky enough to get one, are usually temporary and pay is low.  There's a lot of casual, seasonal work in the Tourism industry, but this is typically "cash in hand" without a work contract.  It may help to enter some searches on this agency website to get a feel for what's available in specific areas:

https://www.adecco.es/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=alicante_alicante

There's the added difficulty for those with UK passports looking for contracted work, because it's an EU requirement for member states to offer contracts to those holding EU passports, over Third Country Nationals which, since Brexit, UK passport holders have become.

Kind regards,

Kim
