Residency

Hello
Myself and my wife moved to the costa blanca in April full time. We have our S1 from the uk and have been to register at the padron. At the health Centre they told us that we will have to get residency for the S1 forms, and sent us to the social security in torrevieja.
Ten we were told to get residency you have to apply at the national police station in torrevieja. Do you have to have an appointment there or can you just turn up? I would appreciate any help from someone who has been down this long road ha ha
