Check with your council Dept. "Tributos".

Hi Bencr85,

You can request a copy of your car tax bill on the SUMA website:

https://www.suma.es/en//obtener-recibo

You can also pay the bill online - the billing period for Alicante province is May each year.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi laurahammie,

Yes, of course - what makes you think it wouldn't be payable annually?

Kind regards,

Kim

Interesting that it’s done that way. Can anyone warn us of the way that tax is calculated?  About to buy a used car so this information might determine how much we spend on a car. I have paid tax on an initial purchase but not annually.

Hi Laura,

Have you ever owned a car in the UK?  If so, you would have paid road tax (either annually or every 6 months) - it's the same in Spain.  I think you may be referring to purchase tax, which is not the same thing.  For example, when we bought our new car last year, we paid IVA (Spain's equivalent of VAT) on the purchase price and then, each year, we pay an annual car tax, the equivalent of the UK's road tax.

Kind regards,

Kim

No we are from the U.S. so it's a one time tax on purchase of the car.  Registration fee's once per year usually about €50 - €100 depending on the state you live.

So it sounds like your annual "registration fees" in the US are the equivalent of Spain's annual car tax, which is set by town halls, so also varies depending on where you live, but is primarily based on engine size and age of vehicle.  Your local SUMA office or town hall will be able to advise regarding the vehicle that you're planning to buy.  As an example, the annual car tax for my 1 year old Kia XCeed, 1.5 Hybrid engine, is €54.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you for the info!  Reasonable and not as scary as I initially thought.  :). Baby steps becoming a citizen but we are making progress!
