Hi

What and where would be the nearest ‘traditional’ Spanish town or village to visit near  Villamartin? I’m thinking whitewashed houses, little windy streets and lots of geraniums in pots 😀 Oh and a nice little cafe !

Thanks

Sounds like you are describing the perfect Andalusian village.

Alicante, Altea, Guadalest ?

Plenty of pretty villages in the area, but not in the style you’ve described.

But if you are looking for things like that, have you been to the cave houses in Rojales?

It's sounds like a description of the town on Tabarca Island. It a typical Spanish town and extremely popular with tourists because of that fact.

I think you will need to book a boat trip over.

Fifty years ago when my family first came here to live, we lived in what would obviously be termed  a Traditional Spanish Village. I assure you it was nothing like the description from the OP!!!

As others have said, there are few ‘pueblos blancos’ in Alicante, but a nice typical Spanish town and a pleasant drive  would be to Almoradi for the Saturday market. Only 20 mins or so from Villamartin. Lovely shady plaza, traditional market used by locals lots of places to have a coffee or churros.

Another nice drive covering the mountain area is the Hondons, including Novelda - interesting architecture and bodegas to visit.

Thank you. That isn’t what I was thinking of and it’s probably changed in fifty years.

I have lived in Almoradi for almost 17 years and, yes, many things have changed even in those 17 years.   There are many nationalities living here, but it is overall a Spanish town.   In the apartment block where I live we have many of those nationalities, English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Spanish, Moroccan, Dutch, Icelandic, Indian, Norwegian, South American, but I may have missed one or two.

We have a lovely bus station (but not many buses), a good health centre, some churches (the main one being in the main square), several supermarkets, lots of other shops, lots of bars and restaurants, a football team with their own football ground (it also has, I believe, a supporters club) and, as has been advised above, a good Saturday morning market that takes up many of the streets around the main square in town.   The town is about 20 minutes' drive inland from Torrevieja and also about 20 minutes' drive from the local hospital.

And next time you're in Alicante, try this area of the old town https://maps.app.goo.gl/7GuEhjn6uHSuK6Ss6 if you haven't been there already, as quite similar to your description...
