Hi,

Our boys own a 2 bedroom holiday apartment overlooking Campoamor golf course.  There has been nobody living there since end of last September.  Last month’s electricity bill was 90 euros and this months is 163 euros.

Can anyone explain why it’s this much when nothing is left on and nobody lives there at the moment.

Thanks

GrahamLynn

Can they not go online and check the invoices. I would check the dates the bills cover, electric companies have been a bit erratic with their billing over the past 12 months.

Is the electric switched off from the mains or left on. If switched off from the mains you should just be paying a monthly standing charge. Electricity prices have rocketed, but it’s the kWh price that’s had a huge increase not the standing charge.

If the electric is not switched off could be any number of reasons, usage can be checked normally on line via the smart meter information, which may pinpoint the usage.

You really need to study the meter/invoices to get a clearer picture.

Squatters? Someone tapping into the electricity supply? Illegal tenants from a key holder?

Those invoices are far too high for an empty apartment. At 5.75 kw potencia your bills should be around 25 euro with everything turned off. What have previous electricity bills been while the apartment was empty?

Thanks for all your suggestions,  my son has finally after hours on the phone to Ibedrola got to speak to someone and they are sending a technician to check it this week, he said it’s one of three things either the meter is faulty, someone is tapping into their electric or squatters.  A friend has been round and it’s defiantly empty, everything is off, so must be one of the other two things.  Will keep you posted.

Hi lynn

Can you explain what you mean by “ if your electric is turned off at the mains you should not be paying the standing charge” please as we only spend 3 months at a time at our villa and always turn off the electricity at the mains, but I still pay the charge when not here

You definitely have to pay a standing charge, as we would do in England, but as one other chap mentioned should be about 25 euros, not 99 euros one month and 163 euros the next month .

Leah, Lynn didn’t say that at all, she said

“If switched off from the mains you should just be paying a monthly standing charge”, which is completely opposite to what you have misread!
