Rights of Brits Wanting to Retire in an EU State

A foreigner such as I, a Brit, wanting to retire to Spain no longer has any Health care covered by the UK. Leastways this is what I understand to be the case to date. My questions are, is there anything in the pipeline regarding any potential change in this regard and what medical cover is currently affordably offered to a retiree with a slightly younger wife who will be living on his basic UK state pension in Spain?

Thanking you in advance for any responses.

Others more knowledgeable and better informed than me will along soon, but I don't think you'd be able to get residency on a basic UK state pension, it's too low to meet the required financial requirements for Spanish residency.

As a retired person who is receiving a UK pension you would, after the first year, be eligible to apply for healthcare through the S1 system.

However,  you would also have to meet the financial requirements which for a couple would add up to around €32,000 per annum.

Steve, Thank you. In the event that it was missed or not understood I am not in Spain but wish to retire in it. I state this in the event that your very much appreciated response was based upon the assumption that I am already in Spain. If indeed I can move to, retire to Spain from the UK while in receipt of my State pension and after one year obtain Health Care in Spain financed by, presumably, the UK then this is wonderful news but I also note that you state that after one year I can 'apply'. Kindly clarify/confirm and perhaps point me to source of this info. I really cannot face living in the UK, defeating an aim of fifty years. Regards,

Steve, I read that bit and can satisfy the requirement. Regards,

Yes SPJ I do know and understand that you are living in the UK.

My post assumed that you are planning to live in Spain.

If you would like to live permanently in Spain you will need to make your initial application for residency at the Spanish embassy while you are still living in the UK. You will need to prove that you have full private healthcare cover paid for a full year and meet the financial requirements. There will be other documents and paperwork needed (and be translated into Spanish) such as your marriage certificate. You will need to have a police report available.

Again, understood Steve. But as to the matter of future health care my question remains, after that year subject to being arrested, dropping dead, etc. provided that ones application has been accepted during that period does one obtain Health care funded by the UK (I assume it's the UK and nt Spain?) through the S1 system or is the application for it an academic exercise which could be turned down: I'm trying to establish if there is a way of obtaining Health care other than paying for it having become a Spanish resident and after that year in question. Regards,

Hi SPJ,

Originally, it was only UK citizens who were protected by the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, who were guaranteed future access to the S1 (and State pension uprating).

However, the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, signed by the UK on 24 December 2020 and by all EU member states at the end of February 2021, does include for the ongoing provision of the S1 for UK-funded healthcare in Spain (and other EU countries) and this has been published on the Gov.UK, for which Ange has given you the link.

Kind regards,

Kim

Kim, Steve, Many thanks. Potentially promising. I should pursue the source i.e. the British government for confirmation because even as a former lawyer with the love of words it is still not clear to me whether I can move to Spain, and being granted residency - god willing - go through the motions to afford the protection of the S1. One thing is for certain: the alternative to being forced through financial circumstances to having to end final years in the U.K. is more expensive than doing oneself in. Not sure if I could afford Switzerland though.
