This is part of the email I received from the company representative who sold us our PHI cover -

Thank you for your reply, how do you feel since yesterday? Yes, private health insurance in Spain excludes epidemics declared as such by the authorities as a general rule. SALUS makes an exception and pays at least the consultations with the doctor or specialist and the first assistance in the hospital emergency room in case of covid symptoms, but no further hospital admission.

I suppose we all need to read the small print in our phi policies! Terrible if it’s all phi companies, Same as most insurances, they make things up to suit! Oh well such is life, stay safe and healthy my friends.

It is all so confusing.

Below is a reply I had last year when I asked what would happen if we became seriously ill with covid needing hospital care or even intensive care

The insurance will cover your medical care if needed.

I hope you don’t have to use it, but the Spanish Health system or Salus will cover it.

After reading this I contacted sanitas and I have been assured that treatment and hospitalization for covid is covered. Maybe it depends on the cover you have and different insurers.
