Just back from a lovely few days in sunny Spain, and wondering, is it just us that gets totally and completely lost almost every time we try and go somewhere?!  We have a map, a satnav, and google maps on our phones, and yet almost every time we want to go more than two miles from our front door the trip takes twice as long as it should!

One of the problems seems to be that if we decide to go, say, to Guardamar for the day, and have only a vague idea of where we would like to go, we dont know what to put in the search on the satnav and often end up at the opposite end of the town. We see lovely places on the internet, think we will go there, and just cant find the actual place when we finally find the town.  Tourist Information offices seem to be similarly elusive.

The latest disaster was ending up on large urbanisations, with dead ends and endless houses while looking for the beach at La Zenia.   We are (reasonably!) intelligent, but it certainly puts a dent in our day and causes unwanted stress!

Any idea or tips gratefully received.

Thanks Julie

Can't give you any tips I'm afraid...but plenty of sympathy!! My husband is a great navigator, but feels defeated here on Costa Blanca. We've lost many hours, much patience too, driving round in circles! Use both car GPS and phone navigator, but almost never arrive where we intended to go.

Well I am really pleased to hear that!! Not just us then. I am beginning to think that as we go out we need to write down where we go, correcting as necessary and adding landmarks for the next trip. Every time feels like the first time!! Maybe you have to live in the area for quite a while before you get it licked. We only visit every few months and in the meantime lose all the bearings we had before. Hopefully someone in here has the answer?!!!

Oh dear Julie!.PLEASE don't tell anyone😳, but when I first arrived here in Torrevieja, I parked my car in the city centre...On my return, I was unable to locate my car for nearly FORTY FIVE minutes! I looked and felt a right plonker!

All of the streets in any Spanish town, look EXACTLY the same! So please don't worry...It is NOT you!...🅱️.

I know exactly what you mean. We have ended up in the wrong place even after directions like “ .... just past the bridge you can’t miss it”.

So what I do know before the trip is find it on google maps then do Street View to get familiar with landmarks, signposts, road junctions of the area I need to be familiar with.

Good luck !

Hello,

My name is Sally and this is my story. I walk around with a chalk and put a cross on some buildings so I know where to turn even after having lived here for 16 months. As the first member, I'd like to welcome everyone else. :-)
