Adopting a dog

I live in the US and visit Spain for 3 months February- April. I want to adopt a dog that I can return to the US with. Has anybody ever done this or can advise me if it is possible.

I imagine it would be possible, but may involve quite a lot of hassle and veterinary bills. Your first step would be to consult the US authorities on what is required in the way of health certification, vaccinations and so on. Your local vet may have this information.
The issue of transport needs to be addressed, depending upon which air line you use, not all of them transport pets. Few airlines permit animals in the cabin, and usually they will only accept small sizes, so presumably it would need to travel in an airline approved crate in the hold.
The rescue centres usually liaise with a local vet so should be able to help you organise whatever health documentation is necessary.
It would be far easier and less costly to adopt an animal from one of the shelters in your local area in America.

Thank you for your information, I know about the European airlines and dogs. The dogs in Spain seem to be less pit bull breed mixes and more terrier. I want a fog tat doesn't shed. I will check with the vet here as well as British airways.

If you do decide to adopt a dog from a Spanish rescue centre, make sure that the dog has been tested negative for Leishmaniasis. This parasitic disease is endemic in the Mediterranean basin and exporting rescue dogs to other European countries has started to cause concern with national veterinarian associations. I don't know whether this is a problem in Florida, but the disease which affects primarily dogs, but also cats and horses, can be fatal.
