I have just been charged 180 euro for damage I did not cause by Goldcar, after looking online they seem to target people who have their own car hire insurance, after numerous phonecalls & emails I still have had no reply from them. If you use this company make sure you take photos, however this may not even prevent these charges! My advice is to stay away!

My son was also wrongly charged by this company, they are not a good company to go with. I would also advise people to steer clear of them.

I've just returned my car today. On pick up it was badly dented, but this was highlighted on the rental sheet. I only did 1 return trip to El Campello. On return they charged me €320 for 'damages', and on the photos they supplied there is no obvious damage. Going to fight this one.

I have been targeted in the same way by gold car ( twice ) 350 euro each time, they will not get a third time from me.

As i will never use them again,my recommendation to everyone is do not use them or any company that they trade as.

Do your homework on this.

Just an update on my case against them back in August. I complained to my bank and they found in my favour, and reimbursed me. Goldcar were given 40 days to appeal the decision, but failed to do so. It took me a while, but I got there in the end. Never give up and fight them all the way.

well done.  Nothing worse than being ripped off is there. Cant believe they are still in business as they get so much bad publicity!

Gold Car are notorious for this, as are many of the car hire companies operating out of Spanish airports. There is a global league for car hire services from airports and Spain always comes bottom. So much so that a few years ago the EU gave a warning to Spain to clean its act up in this respect, but nothing changed.

The thing is, most of the cowboy car hire firms charge peanuts for car hire, some about €50 a week for the base car. It's obvious they don't make any money at these prices, so they make it by either selling exorbitant insurance waivers or making false claims and charging unsuspecting customers. Having your own insurance cover doesn't mean anything to these guys, they don't care about the actual insurance, they just want to charge for "addons". So either you buy the addons or they just make a spurious charge against your card.

The best approach is to use a reputable company and always take the fully insured option. Yes, it will push the price to €150+ per week but it will mean don't get hit with extras.
