Hi Allank

Open a transerwise account they use Belgium IBAN which is accepted by all the utility companies I have just been around and sorted them while here at the moment plus closed the Sabadell account when asked why I mentioned the charges the lady just looked, nodded her head and smiled 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Only thing I haven't worked out yet is cash withdrawl but thats not going to cost me €140 year I doubt.....

Nope, ignore that, we are non residents, opened in 2019, no charges since then. You have to open in branch if non resident not online.

i found one in Torrevieja. I cant open the telephone account as it requires a Spanish phone no and I don't have one. However they have an account with charges of just 20 euros per quarter which are waived if you have a balancce of approximately £1000 so that wil do for me. I have a second appointment tomorrow to open the account after supplying some information by email today.

Interestingly I contacted Starling about this and they say that any company refusing to take euro payments with a GB Iban are acting illegally.

This is nothing to do with the EU but with SEPA. This was their full reply.

I didn't expect them to take my case up individually. This is clearly a major issue. They are undoubtedly taking it up at a SEPA level as its in their interest.

Its up to us to complain to the companies as I have done with Hidraqua and to log details of companies for SEPA action which I will do.

Have you done that?

I asked the question but they aren't interested its the banks they deal with that charge I think and they dont want to incur charges thats my take on it for what its worth....!!

To be honest it was less hassle to open the wise account transfer all the DD's and everyone was happy plus they offer a better exchange rate than Starling so win win on that count.

I would have liked to keep my Sabadell account only to withdraw cash as I haven't tried that yet but there is time will see how I get on with Starling at the ATM's.

I had considered Wise but thought it was a worse rate but I may have a look. I found nowhere with the Starling card in Spain where I could make free withdrawals and ironically the best is Banco Sabadell who charge €1.8 for a withdrawal!

In another post I did mention that I expect to open a Cajamar Account tomorrow. I sent off some paperwork today and have the appointment tomorrow. That is supposed to be fee free if I keep a certain amount on deposit.
