Just thought I'd let you know that my account is set up with cajamar with the deposit amount and working well.

I've now got the HITS sim too but they tell me that if no top up is made for three months the number is terminated. As I seldom make calls in Spain I think I would just end up with a growing balance!...

...

However thank you for all your help.

If you ring customer services you can arrange to keep your number(and credit) without constant top ups for €5 per year also  you can also arrange an auto to up which when your balance drops below €5 they top up with 10€ by direct debit. I run this phone for €10 per year. I,m sure I have already told you all this earlier so give them a call. Pleased you have also sorted your account with Cajamar. You won't regret it.

Thank you again and you are correct that you have told me this. I now know how I can create auto top up but it tells me that if I don't do a top up for three months the number will be discontinued that is what is stopping me.

You don't appear to have this problem perhaps because you do make some calls and the balance tops up but I have always used whatsapp for any Spanish numbers or email.

Apparently there is a mobile outlet in La Zenia who can do it too so I will call in there and discuss.

Allan, I don't make any calls with it, it falls below €5 (my minimum amount to need a top up) once a year when they take €5 from my balance to keep the number for another year. Hence it costs me €10 a year to run it. Call customer service to arrange to "keep your number", 1212.(I think).

You have finally gotten through! I was told it could be done in La Zenia by an outlet there Dog & Bone Mobile Phone so I called today and the confusion has been between automatic top up and as you say "keep your number". They took another 5 euros off me today which they tell me retains my number till July 2022 and at that point she says they will take just 3 euros to renew it for a year and when the balance falls below 5 euros top it up. So that is now sorted for 3 euros a year which is nothing is it. Thank you.

Hallelujah!!   you,ve finally got there!            I believe its the cheapest way to have a Spanish mobile and their customer service is excellent and if you have to use it its not overpriced either, but aways remember with all Spanish mobiles there is a "connection fee" on every call, which UK doesn't have.

All banks now charge for accounts. Its quite expensive for non residents but it is also a hefty charge for residents.

I bank with Sabadell and I pay €60 per annum.

As already suggested, you could open a Wise account which will have a EU account number.

I’ve just complete my house purchase and am very new to this banking system, my estate agent couldn’t wait to get to get me to sign up to caixa bank ,so my wife and I did but I see the monthly charges are €50 is this right , because we are non resident at the moment.

This thread is a few months old now but I started it when I was looking to avoid charges with Sabadell. I switched to Cajamar Bank and I'm very happy with it.

It is a cooperative and the option I took is the account where you deposit just over €1000 in a "share" account separate to your current account. You can't withdraw this until you close the account but then there are no charges at all for the current account or for the debit card.

Apparently there is the possibility of a dividend based on your share account as you are a member of a cooperative but that will depend on profits so I'm not banking on that!

I've found them very responsive to queries by email with a dedicated account manager and withdrawals are free at their branches. You can also withdraw for a small fee at other banks cash points.
