Vehicle documents
Can anyone advise is it illegal to carry copies of your vehicle paperwork (ITV & insurance documents), or does it have to be the originals kept in your car? Tia.

I’ll refer you to the excellent N332 website ( in English and administered by local experts including police) - has excellent information and guidance on all things related to driving and travel - I particularly like to use the example documents to carry in case of being stopped ( permission for others to drive)
Police have access to all documentation at the roadside so there is no imperitive to carry originals, I never used to and in a couple of routine stops copies have been accepted without comment.
If you install the MiDGT app then all your documents are in that including your driving licence. That only applies, if you are the registered owner of course but there is nothing to stop you installing the app on another phone using your digital certificate so then your wife/partner etc. etc. will be able to show them too if requested.
All that said I really don't understand why people worry about having the originals in the car. Nobody is going to break in to steal them and if the car itself gets stolen then the likelihood is that you'll never see it again so what happens to the documents is of no concern to you.
