Get him a phrase book and 3 weeks is plenty of time for him to pick up enough basics to be confident in shops etc. 😃

And don't be anxious, yours is a big move but with a bit of digging you can find the support you need. (Although I didn't 😐)

Even for a summer job he will need to have the legal documents to allow him to work in Spain and that is dependent on the type of visa he has allowing him to reside in Spain.

In 3 weeks? You would need an exceptionally good memory and then you would of only memorised set phrases to ask certain limited things but very doubtful that you would understand any replies given from a Spanish speaker, listening exercises in Spanish are something else 😊

A good start would be to attend basic Spanish lessons along with an holiday Spanish course and that would definitely be more useful than a phrase book of words or sentences that you would fail in pronouncing.

As a beginner with only 16 months experience myself in learning Spanish this is my opinion and observation only 😁

Hi, Silvia.  Find a local school that does Spanish language classes ... he'll need to speak Spanish if he's ever going to feel comfortable living in Spain.  Hopefully, there'll be some younger people in the classes, so that he can meet people. As others have said, he's going to need a working visa for a summer job.  Maybe he could volunteer at a charity shop or a local animal centre - they're always looking for volunteers.  This would certainly get him out of the house to start meeting people.  

With a phrase book it will take months and months. Phrase books don't help with pronunciation.

he is EU italian national, he understands italian too, that should help :), I hope...

That will definitely help, and he should find it relatively easy to learn Spanish if he's a native speaker of Italian.   As an EU national, he'll just have to fight it out in the job market with all the Spanish and other young people looking for jobs.
