We will be shipping our household effects and relocating to our recently acquired property in Catral, later this year from South Africa. Has anyone on the forum gone through this experience recently? whereby we could make contact and exchange experiences such that we can plan the move with limited hassles. Would appreciate any response which would prove helpful.

""Has anyone on the forum gone through this experience recently?""

Yes, several times and either a friend or myself have shipped things, from the antipodes. Unless you are emotionally attached to your belongings, weight up the cost of shipping these with that of buying them here on arrival. The suggestion of weighing up is an obvious one but we don't immediately think about it. We are more inclined to ship items over. Some items will be worth shipping, others can be replaced.

Many thanks for your response.  The house we have purchased is already furnished, so will not be shipping any large items of furniture. The move will really consist of numerous boxes, some kitchen appliances, clothing, mirrors, pictures, personal items etc.  My query relates more to the moving experience - the choice of company, the import regulations, the time period and any specific considerations or things to avoid.

Hi Mike,

I’m planning a move from Sydney and have an inventory like yourself.  There may be differences in procedure but it might give you an idea.

it’s been estimated at 7 cubic metres so only a part load. Estimated transit time 8-14 weeks because of the part load and brexit as the load will travel via UK ports and will probably get caught up in new paperwork.

Your removals company will organise the paperwork for you. If you want your items insured , you’ll need to have the removals firm pack it.

You can’t take any sort of food item obviously or plants. To avoid import taxes etc you also aren’t supposed to take anything less than 12 months old!  Try proving when I bought my bedding?   Tip there is, make sure everything  looks used and remove any sales tags.

Good luck! .

Hi there we moved SA to UK to Spain, my husband and I and our fur baby!! Hopefully no more moves. You’re right only bring personal things ( maybe you can squeeze in some biltong🙃). But we also brought our braai- needed that immediately 😁😁.Anything can be purchased here and prices are ok.

Good Luck you’re going to love your new life living peacefully without fear.

Joan
