I know of one household that experienced the gas/robbery.

It was around 15 years ago, but it did happen. It was not in Torrevieja.

I know the the victims personally.

Their car was stolen as well.

Oh thats terrible. How nasty!

Hi Sam

I'm reading information about Costa Calida. Just wondering if there's any particular parts thats not too quiet with nice bars, restaurants and shops? We don't want too quiet and isolated. TIA

Hi everyone,

We are looking at properties in Torrevieja and seriously contemplating buying one. Infact we've made enquiries about many of different properties. However, after reading a lot of negative  feedback with regards to the crime rate, we are now somewhat reluctant.  One comment was very dist...

...urbing and really frightening as its been revealed that burglars have been gassing properties with intentions of robbing unresponsive people in their beds. It literally made me feel sick.

Can anyone give me information about this subject please as we are supposed to be putting a deposit on a property next week.

Other crime in the area doesn't concern me as much as this. After all crime is part of every day life everywhere.

Thank you in advance.

Pauline & Michelle x

Hi.

We have lived in Torrevieja for over 6 years now,and not experienced any crime.

Our many free newspapers obviously report crimes, but nothing out of the ordinary, that you wouldn't find anywhere else?

We lived in Manchester....enough said!

I'd go out at night without my husband.

Both of us have always felt safer here than the uk.

If we go into Town at night,we feel perfectly safe.

I wouldn't say the crime rate is high here at all.

Squatters are rearing their ugly heads, but if you report they have broken in,in the first 24 hours of them moving in,you have a good chance of getting them out.

I wouldn't hesitate to move here, cost of living us amazing too.

Good luck, whatever you choose to do.

Hi Pauline

I would go along with everything that Robbie 73 has said.... I have lived here 18years  & worked in the town for almost 12 years in a shop with other ex pats  never heard or read or been told about the  'gassing' crime incidents that you have mentioned, although with a town of such multi national occupants there is of course some crime but nothing major. I am in La Mata just outside of Torrevieja & crime here is quite low.

Cheers

It's a common fallacy that crops up now and then that these gassings take place to rob people whilst they are in their beds....

I've never actually read or heard anything about anyone getting robbed in this way.

I looked up the crime rates recently for the Costa Blanca and Torrevieja and Benidorm were the top two. Here in Benidorm the crimes that add up are mainly theft from tourist areas including pickpockets and handbag/phone theft. Prostitution and the "Pea men" are very much a problem too.

More problems are starting to rise with squatters entering vacant property and holiday homes. Its extremely difficult to evict squatters who have families and this is putting some buyers off. That problem would be worth looking into further.....

Hi Steve, my partner and ex husband were gassed and robbed in 2003 in Los Dolsea near Vila Martin.

Hi Bob,

So very sorry to hear about that. It must have been horrendous for you all. It is the first instance that I've actually heard of.

As I've said before,  I live in Benidorm and I agree with Robbie that its safer here in Spain overall. I feel quite safe walking around Benidorm late at night and in the early hours but you do have to be sensible as there are muggers and prostitutes in certain areas that need to be avoided. I lived in Nottingham before I came here to live and would have never gone out on my own after dark.

You will probably never see an act of crime whilst here in Spain but my major concern would be the squatter problem that seems to be getting out of control.

Hola Steve.

Yes,recently a nurse went on her shift, and squatters moved after she left home?

Don't know the outcome?

Our urb Spanish administrator, who is a lawyer said whilst the pandemic is here no one including squatters can be evicted, also Spanish law says the actual owner of the house is responsible for paying any utility bills, regardless of who is in their property?

This is preposterous, and he admitted it was too,but the law is the law?

There are some pretty daft Spanish laws here.

The gassings were happening many years ago,but not heard of them happening now?

We have never regretted moving here for any reason.

Thank you so much. We are so looking forward to getting our apartment in Torrevieja.  This comment has helped greatly in us making our final decision. Xx
