Hi All , Please excuse my ignorance but is a Leylandii tree a pine tree ? I have looked this up on the internet and it appears to be a member of the pine family so would these caterpillars nest on these trees ?  We have lots of the Leylandii tree around our gardens in the Hondon valleys and intend to move with our dogs at some stage in the near future so now a little concerned , any advise on what is a pine tree would be gratefully received

Thank you 😀

Hi I am no expert, but have experience with the pests (having dogs for many years). I never had a problem. My dogs seemed to avoid them whilst out walking.

As far as I know pines & firs are more correctly referred to as conifers of which there are many species. The caterpiliars generally "go for" the natural wild pine trees typical of this area. However I have seen them nest building in other varieties.

Fir species number about 50, Pine species are much more numerous, about 120, and native to many forest types in the Northern Hemisphere.

take care. read above. Prevention is better than cure.
