You've done nothing wrong. It's only fairly recently that they changed the system. The new non-resident NIE has a clearly stated expiry date on it.

Are we in a parallel universe ?

As I write looking at my NIE certificate issued on March 1st in Orihuela apart from which the only other date on it is my DoB.

No mention of an expiry date whatsoever.

Are you resident or non-resident? Did you tick Residencia or Estancia on the EX-15?

Non resident (not yet anyway) and not sure what was ticked on what forms as I had a Gestor do it all for me, I just signed what was put in front of me and in the end went to the police station on the day and signed there.

I'm surprised you didn't get a copy of the application. It can only be that your gestor ticked the residencia box. Yet more evidence that one shouldn't trust the experts!

Well she came highly recommended and I'm not aware that anybody has had cause to complain about what she's done for them but I will ask about it when I see her next.

Hello Jim, my granddaughters are coming to live with me and need an nie for their sip card, schools etc.  They lived here 8 years ago but since returned to England.  The eldest is 14 and had an nie when she was over here.  Since returning to England she no longer has the nie.  It was lost in the paperwork in England.  How do I go about getting her a new one when I don´t have her old nie number.

Ouch! I don't know. She shouldn't need a new NIE number. but whether or not the police or foreigners' office could find it I don't know - it all depends on what search facilities they have. If she still has the same passport number as at the time of the original application, then this may assist them.

Unless anyone else can advise, I suggest a new application, but in the reason for applying box put 'extravio del original'.

My NIE was dormant for several years and I had lost the Certificate. I rocked up at a National Police station, queued for an hour, then produced my passport. They located my number in 30 seconds, even quoting my late fathers first and middle names!

That's excellent information, Steve, and I'm sure it will help a lot of people.

Did you need the EX-15 application form? Or pay a fee?
