I've decided to hop on a plane next Wednesday to stay at a property I bought in May and have only bought a one way ticket as I am not sure how long I want to stay (probably between 7-10 days).  On Easyjet's check-in page they say I may be refused entry unless I have a return ticket which scared me a bit.  To be honest this is the first time I have ever booked a one way ticket so I feel slightly nervous.  Is this just scare tactics to get me to book a return?  BTW I will fly home on Ryanair as they fly home later in the day.

Good for you!! Surely its just scare tactics..why does it matter to them if you've only booked one way !! Go and enjoy your time away, if in doubt go with Ryanair one way at a time, no worries with them

Hi my friend and her husband flew out 12 days ago on a one way ticket (Ryanair). No Officials at Alicante airport asked to see that a return flight had been booked, they just had their passport stamped showing date of entry.

I usually book one way as it gives me the freedom to decided how long I want to stay, obviously keeping within the 90 days in a rolling 180 days.

Go to your holiday home, enjoy your stay.

Regards

Anne

Hi Scots Lass,

It's not scare tactics - purchasing a return ticket is one method that Gov.UK recommends travellers use to avoid being asked for the "Carta de invitación" (letter of invitation), since we became Third Country Nationals on 1 January this year:

"At Spanish border control, it is likely you will need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing. Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit unless you can demonstrate that you are resident of Spain and are returning to your place of residence (see Requirements for UK nationals resident in Spain section below for further details). You may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show you have enough money for your stay
  • show proof of accommodation for your stay, for example, a hotel booking confirmation, proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g. second home), or an invitation from your host or proof of their address if staying with a third party, friends or family. The Spanish Government has clarified that the “carta de invitation” is one of the options available to prove that you have accommodation if staying with friends or family. More information is available from the Spanish Ministry of Interior."

However, I've yet to hear of a UK citizen being asked for one at Spanish border control.  Whilst Easyjet are technically correct, I think it may be better described as another example of their "creative marketing"! 😉😄

Have a lovely holiday.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks everyone for your responses.  I'm sure there are plenty of people who buy one way tickets without getting turned away at immigration.

Also you have proof of accommodation as you own property.

Thanks Eileen for reminding me to take a copy of my proof of property ownership.
