...d agreed to print the attachments for us. I forwarded the email.  At Bilbao check in for the ferry there were lots of people passing their phones through their car windows  with the QR code on.

...honest. We travelled the 350 miles to Aranda on Saturday and the 150 miles to Bilbao on Sunday morning.Found the port a bit tricky to find and I don't think we would have but for following the spoken directions on my phone. I couldn't get it on the car's satnav as it's in an un named road !

Yes do it online. You could always do the form on the wifi on board the ferry and then produce the QR code.

We are going from Portsmouth to Bilbao. We sail from Portsmouth  Wednesday at 23.00 hrs and get to Bilbao on Friday at 08.00 hrs. So I can submit the forms Wednesday morning and I need them back by mid day as we have to drive to Portsmouth. Thanks

You need the QR and passenger locator form to board the ferry so you can't do it on the ferry. They check your documents before you board. If you haven't got all the documents at check in for Britanny ferries you will be turned away. This happened to people in a car just ahead of us.
