Having finally imported my little car and having it finally on Spanish plates, we've set up a long term car parking facility near the airport.  I know that they do a complimentary car clean prior to picking the car up, but given the amount of sand etc which the car was in before I dropped it off (we live near the coast), I'm wondering whether its worth buying one of those protective covers to protect it a bit from the sand especially. The one I was looking at cost about 60 euros on line... any advice would be welcome!! I know the car isn't worth much as it's 13 years old but only 33K kilometres in it so hope we get a few more years out of it yet!!  thanks

I think you'll need to spend a bit more than €60 for a cover which will survive the weather conditions it will potentially be subject to.

Hi Dubiner, if you do opt for buying a cover it may be worth obtaining one from the range that has breathable vents built in.

Thanks the one I was looking at said it had 3 layers with a layer that 'breathes' and waterproof exterior...(not so sure that's such an issue in Alicante!) but just seeing the amount of sand on it after just spending a month there, I figure it may be better that it's protected against the sand more than anything else...

Hi Dubliner

We have tried a few covers but have now given up. The Car Park company did warn us and they have been brilliant at securing it on - even sent photos but they have all ended up in shreds due to the heat and winds. They wash it and we accept the fact that is the best option now. If you are worried about paint damage might be worth paying bit extra for the undercover option.

thanks very much..sounds like it's not worth the money to buy one!!  Might investigate the covered car parks at a later date (just took out the one year contract!)

thanks for the advice - saves me the hassle of paying money for something that won't work!!

Hello,

I use Claus parking who do both inside and outside parking. I have seen may cars that have been covered where it has come off.

Whether its due to the anchor points pulling off of poor material I don' t know, but it looks like they are not a good idea.

The other thing to remember is that as we get a lot of wind round the airport there is the risk that sand will blow up under the cover.

With the cover in place, the grit will work like sandpaper and wreck your paintwork.

Thanks will investigate Claus parking closer to the end of this contract (just signed it last month) as I realise that if I 'count' the days the car is in 'storage' it may be just as cheap to pay for a covered car parking spot. It's not a very expensive car but there's still a few good years left in it!! thanks for your advice - I'll check them out for next year
