New tourist tax Costa brava

Not sure if you’re asking about Costa Brava as per your heading or Costa Blanca.

Costa Brava have had a tourist tax for 10 years

The rules will be similar I’m sure for the Costa Blanca, but the charges could be be different.

It applies to anyone staying in hotels, campsites, holidays apartments,  holiday lets,  etc in fact any overnight stay. 

So yes if you are a property owner and you rent out your property you will be obliged to collect the tourist tax.  No idea who you forward the collected taxes, but I’m sure it will be mentioned nearer the time.  Even Spanish residents and citizens have to pay the tax if they holiday in a part of Spain which operates a tourist tax. We paid it when we holidayed in the Balearics a couple of years ago, if I remember rightly we had to pay on check in. It appeared on our invoice when we checked out. . 

However it appears that’s it down to each municipality if they impose the tourist tax. The mayor of Benidorm has already said no to the tax.

According to most of the articles I have glanced through today they all mention hotels, b&bs, tourist lets.

This tourist tax is already applied in the Balearic Islands and whilst the Valencian regional government has also adopted it, I understand they don't plan to introduce it until late 2023 and it will be optional for provincial councils to apply it.  Although the tax itself is relatively small - €2 per person, per night, in hotel accommodation - it will not apply to children under the age of 16.  The Valencian government has been heavily criticised by Alicante province, which says it has no plans to apply the tax.

Hi Lynn sorry for confusion I was asking about Costa Blanca where I have a property for our use only and was wondering whether I would be liable for the new proposed tax

Given some of the alarmist headlines I've seen in the British gutter press, you could be forgiven for thinking it will have a detrimental effect on tourism.  Hopefully, visitors will read the accurate details in better publications.

Current situation is that the tax starts in the Valencian Community in 2024 and will range from 50c to 2€:

50c for hotels y casas rurales up to 3⭐,1,50€ standard tourist apartments, 2€ for 5⭐ hotels.

 It's for tourist accommodation.

Look on Alicante news,  my  Murcia news said 2023, but it looks like Alicante  is against it,
