Hi all,

At last!  Announced by the UK Government this morning, I know this news will be welcomed by many UK citizens who have lived long-term in Spain and been denied their democratic rights in the UK:

"UK General elections

From 16 January 2024, British citizens living abroad who have previously lived in the UK or been registered to vote in the UK at some point in their lives, are now eligible to register to vote in UK general elections regardless of how long they’ve been living outside the UK. A new law has removed the previous 15-year time limit.

You can:

Your overseas declaration is valid for 3 years. You will need to confirm your personal information every 3 years."

Kind regards,

Kim

Shocking that those that decide to leave the UK are allowed a vote in how the country is run.

Shocking that those who have left the country and still pay taxes to UK, have their pensions decided by the UK government, have their health care arrangements decided by the UK government, have families in UK and so on have had taxation without representation for so long. They can't vote in the national elections in the country they live in and they couldn't vote in the national elections of their home country yet many pay taxes to both countries.

And then they have to listen to the self righteous.

Those ( after the UK referendum 2016), before, had freedom of travel within Europe & to reside there. That was "pulled from under their rug" together with their democratic right to object. V

Don't how this was 'announced this morning' because the link to register has been on the web since the 12th. that I know of.

Hello

Thanks Kim, this applies to me!

My last vote was the Brexit vote haha,     what good did that do?  I dont have property in the UK but I have  pensions, son  & daughter,  and

friends , so always remained interested -- now I can contribute again.

Cheers

It was announced via Gov.UK this morning, for which I am registered for email alerts, hence why I posted it immediately, even though it doesn't apply to me.

If the best contribution you can make is to quibble about the date of its publication, I wonder why you didn't post the information four days ago on the 12th 🤔

Seemingly the actual right is restored as of today but the form for applications to go on the register was released ahead of that.

I put mine in on the 12th. and received a confirmation that it was being forwarded to the relevant local authority (last UK address) yesterday.

Who, if anyone, I vote for is another question entirely!

Don't suppose it's anything to do with it being a general election year. The Conservative party no doubt are looking to increase votes from expats.
