My partner has bank account with Sabadell she has her residency. I wanted a bank account or go on her as joint . The bank has said it is not possible unless i have residency. To get residency i have to have a spanish bank account..I am a british citizen of 47 years own property here have a N.I.E They are not actually saying why but i think its because i was born in Iran. Does anyone no a bank that would give me one.

Hello

You can't 'share' residencia with your partner, everyone has to apply independently for residencia ( now a TIE),   Try the other banks in the area to enquire about opening a bank account -- that is only a starting point for your residencia application, you have several other documents  to produce before you can  apply, but someone on here will be able to help with that  though I expect your partner knows the procedure as you say she already has residencia

I know that i was saying to have a joint bank account. We think its because of the sanctions put in place with the US. We have all the paperwork in place just need a bank account to open.

Hello

In that case I apologise as I misunderstood your question. Good Luck with your bank  account search  &  Residencia  application

Unfortunately there still are many banks out there who cling onto the long outdated notion that only Spanish can hold accounts with them!

The truth is that EU law provides that if you are legally resident in the EU then you should not be discriminated against for reasons of nationality, origin, or place of residence.

A person refused an account must be informed of the specific reason or reasons why.

Has a bank actually refused you and given any of the above as a reason why?

To open a non resident account all that's normally necessary is your NIE and passport.

I have been told today that i cannot have a bank account in my name no reason. we will take this further. My partner has had a account with them since 2018 and has just had it upgraded as she now has residency.

She complained to them about all this and they have come back and said i can go on hers but will not be allowed to authorise any payments and not to have a bank card. She told them that it was discrimination and there answer is thats all i can offer.

I am hoping this will be enough for me when i go for residency in the new year I have all the other paperwork ready.

I also have emailed 2 other banks and awaiting there reply.

I think the issue the bank has is that you'd like to have a joint bank account but do have different resitential status. Banks in Spain have usually non-residents and residents accounts with different conditions. Basically they can't have a resident and a non resident on one account due to that. Plus, if you ask for an account on your own, you will need to supply some paperwork regarding to your finances and proove where the funds you are going to have on that account come from, this is due to the latest bank regulations to prevent money laundry.

Sabadell bank DO discriminate.  They refused my wife  who is Chinese but UK citizen but were quite happy to open an account for me.  Choose another bank.  Sabadell are an expensive bank to have an account with anyway. I quickly moved on to an other bank (Bankinter) and my wife opened an account with La Caixa.
