You must apply in person giving proof of identity and a NIE.

Hi Alison

If you have already appointed a lawyer to handle the purchase, you may decide to give them Power of Attorney to remove the need to visit Spain just to do some paperwork. Perhaps they could open a bank account for you?

I'm sure other people on this forum will have some knowledge in this area.

Cheers

Steve

You can give a Spanish Lawyer the Power of Attorney with a section for bank account for them to open an account on your behalf.  You have to have the document notarised in the UK.  The Spanish Lawyers tend to stick to the main Banks so beware that the Charges and Costs of that account can be non-competitive and expensive.  UK Notary costs vary greatly as well, I paid £150 for his stamp and signature.

Other more favourable Bank accounts can be opened but only when you are in Spain or at a minimum have NIE and Residence address.  Carajamar provide an online account for Expats with no Charges.

Alternatively a lot of expats use WISE Bank which you setup in UK, they provide you with different currency accounts and a Debit card (£5 fee for card), you can setup DD's and withdraw 250 Euros cash a month without charge.  The only charge is currency exchange i.e GBP to Euro, the charge is minimal.
