Hi - myself and my other half are looking at buying a a small apt so we can stay for a few months of the year and like the areas around the square and church. Would this be a very quiet area in Winter, would there be some restaurants open or does it close up completely like some areas. We are no Spring chickens though so not looking for anything hectic😉

Many thanks in advance

Hello Marti

I have just come back from La Mata market which is on every Wednesday morning throughout the year. It's very quiet these days & half it's normal size but that helps with social distancing. La Mata has a lot of residents in normal times so doesn't close completely in the winter months & several cafes/restaurants/shops/supermarket/bank etc are always open.

If things return to normal then the area you mentioned is busy &  can be noisy at certain times of the year - just look a couple of streets back for your property to avoid that & all the places I mentioned will still only  be about 10mins walk away.

La Mata is really nice & still quite spanish which is lovely & it has  a great bus service too - if I can help with anymore info. please let me know...

Cheers

Hi Elinspain thank you thats really helpful. We have seen online some properties around Avenida del Mediterraneo and Calle del Marbe so we thought they could work due to proximity to the beach..would they be far enough back do you think? Or would we be better looking at the other end where the Boardwalk/beach start.

Many thanks again

Marti

Hello

Yes both of those streets  are further on from the town square ( think its Calle del Mar)  but everywhere in La Mata is only 10mins max. from the beach so no problems there. It's only the streets adjoining the square, church etc that I would avoid , anywhere else is fine including the  area at the other end of the boardwalk - thats about a 15min stroll into the centre

Cheers

Hi

We had an apartment one block from the Square for 3 years. Its extremely quiet in winter, but everywhere is still open. This part of La Mata is mainly locals, so there arent many tourists in winter, but all bars/shops etc are open. Its the best of both worlds. Many days we would only see a handful of cars on the main road.

Saying that, its getting more and more noisy, and thats one of the reasons we decided to move. Although the Square looks very pretty and has sea views etc, that church bell is LOUD!! It sounds 4 times an hour, on Weds and Sunday its non stop until noon, then again in the evening. Its not a bad thing, but it will be noticeable if youre within a couple of blocks. They also have really loud/late parties in the Square during the busier summer months. Great to visit, not so great at 2am. None of this is a deal breaker, but be aware if youre hoping for a place near the Square.

Ive been visiting La Mata for almost 20 years, so please feel free to message/reply on here if you have any more questions :)

Hi - many thanks for your feedback. Its good to know this. I think we need to rent in the area near the square first for a couple of months. We wont be living there all year if we do buy and will prib stay out of season but  it will be good to get a feel for the place first.

Thanks again I really appreciate the info

Youre welcome. La Mata Siesta is normally throughout the month of October, and its fairly full on from noon, most days. Great for a few days then its more like Chinese water torture! Seeing a Mariachi band coming up the main street, playing Happy Birthday, at 2am is not uncommon. Definitely worth renting in October to see it all.

You will easily get to know where you can and cant hear the Church bells, and you can still be central. The bin wagons in the centre are 1.30am and empty the bar bottle etc. So steer clear of anywhere overlooking the bins.

La Mata is the most wonderful place to live and stay, the Square and all the side streets are packed with the best food and drink, and Im sure you will have the best stay.

Regards
