TAXI drivers in Valencia, Alicante, Madrid, Barcelona and across the region of La Rioja plan to strike 'indefinitely' in protest over the presence of Über and Cabify cars in their cities.
They want a limit on the number of licences given to these cut-price chauffeur services, which they say are putting them out of business.
Cabbies in Barcelona went on strike for two days over Wednesday and Thursday this week (July 25 and 26) after the city council's decision to only award one Über or Cabify licence per 30 mainstream taxis was overruled by the regional High Court of Justice.
They are now set to stage ongoing industrial action until further notice, and their counterparts in Madrid have joined them in support in order to put pressure on the central government to enforce 'legal changes' to curb the number of Über and Cabify licences which can be issued.
Valencia, Alicante and several towns in La Rioja, including its regional capital Logroño, have since confirmed they will do likewise.
At present, according to the Professional Federation of Taxis in Spain's capital, 'there are no cabs in Madrid'.
Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport and the main Atocha station have both been left completely without a taxi service – in fact, cab drivers went as far as to block off the entrances to the four flight terminals with their cars in protest.
Only the elderly and disabled will be given transport at Barajas airport, and this will be free of charge.
Barcelona taxi drivers spent Friday night with their cars parked nose-to-tail along the Gran Vía, and were due to repeat the process last night (Saturday) and to continue for as long as their industrial action lasts.
They aim to cause traffic chaos in central Barcelona in the height of the tourism season.
Between Madrid airport and Barcelona's Gran Vía, around 4,000 cars are involved in the picket, and another 300 or so from Sevilla, the Basque Country and the rest of Catalunya are expected to head to Spain's second-largest city in the next few days to add theirs to the blockade.
La Rioja taxis went on strike this morning (Sunday) at 06.00 and intend to continue until the early hours of Tuesday, July 31, especially in the cities of Logroño and Calahorra.
Taxis in Valencia and Alicante cities are due to down tools all day tomorrow (Monday, July 30).
